Maintaining Your New Garage Floor Epoxy: What You Need to Know

Posted on

If you spend a lot of time in your garage or are simply looking to add some value to your home, having an epoxy coating applied to your garage flooring can be a smart investment. Not only is garage floor epoxy very durable, but it looks great as well. Thankfully, epoxy flooring is very low-maintenance, though there are some basic care tips and tricks you should follow to keep your floors looking like-new for many years to come. When properly cared for, you can typically expect your epoxy flooring to last for five to 10 years.

Sweep and Vacuum Regularly

Taking time to sweep your floors once every few days will keep dust and other outdoor debris from settling on your new epoxy coating. Over time, this debris can lead to surface scratches that gradually wear away the protective surface of the epoxy itself--so regular sweeping is one of the simplest and most effective ways you can care for this flooring type. For corners and other tight spots, you may also want to use a hose vacuum for debris removal once a week or so.

Deep-Clean as Needed

Occasionally, your epoxy flooring may need a deep-cleaning; this will likely need to be done about once every few months if you're storing vehicles or doing any messy projects in your garage. The best way to deep-clean an epoxy floor is to use a quality microfiber mop and a quality cleaning solution specifically designed for use on epoxy flooring.

Stay Away From Soapy Cleaners

Speaking of cleaners, always test any cleaner in a small and inconspicuous area of your epoxy flooring before you continue with your deep cleaning. Stay away from soap-based cleaners, which can leave a residue on your flooring that can build up and dull the appearance of your flooring over time. Many people use window cleaner diluted with water to clean their epoxy floors effectively without leaving any type of residue.

Clean Up Spills Promptly

While epoxy flooring is generally stain-resistant, it's not completely stain-proof. With this in mind, it's important to clean up spills on your garage floor as soon as you notice them. This includes engine oil and other chemicals that could cause damage or staining to your floors over time.

A little maintenance goes a long way with your new garage floor epoxy coating, so be sure to keep these tips in mind moving forward!
